Picture Perfect: A guide to the perfect outfits for your engagement session
As a wedding photographer I’m often asked by clients what they should wear to their engagement sessions. Picking the right outfits for your session can be a bit overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to help you pick the perfect outfits for you and your partner:
Choose outfits that make you feel confident
You want to feel comfortable and confident during your engagement session, so choose outfits that are going to make you feel like your best self. If you’re someone who has never worn heels, you can probably skip them for the engagement session and opt for something more casual.
Coordinate , don’t match
While it may be tempting to channel your inner Dale and Brennan and wear matching outfits, coordinating is a better option.
Choose colors that go well together and consider the location of your shoot when selecting your colors. This adds depth and visual interest to your photos and will help make your photos look more cohesive.
Dress for the location
Consider your location and season when selecting your outfits. If you’re shooting in a natural setting, earthy tones and softer fabrics can enhance the overall aesthetic, whereas if your engagement session is going to have you strutting down the streets of Brooklyn, opting for something a bit more urban and chic might be the way to go.
Beach/Marina
For Her:
Flowy Dresses: Choose a flowing, maxi dress or a bohemian-style dress that complements the beachy atmosphere. Soft, pastel colors or beachy patterns work well.
For Him:
Light Linen Shirt: Opt for a light-colored linen shirt for a breezy and beach-appropriate look. Pair it with casual khaki or linen shorts.
Sunglasses: Add a touch of coolness with a stylish pair of sunglasses to complement the beach setting.
Park
For Her:
If you want to go the more traditional route, A-Line or Wrap Dresses are the way to go. A-line or wrap dresses work well in a park setting, offering both elegance and comfort. Floral patterns or soft pastels can enhance the natural surroundings.
If you’re looking for something a little bit more casual, denim and a styled T-shirt, blouse or a chunky sweater always makes for some great, more candid-looking photos.
Comfortable Flats or Low Heels: Since you might be walking on grass, opt for comfortable flats or low heels that won't sink into the ground.
For Him:
Casual Button-Down Shirt: Choose a casual button-down shirt in a light color or subtle pattern. Pair it with well-fitted chinos or khaki pants. Canvas Sneakers or Loafers: Complete the look with comfortable canvas sneakers or loafers for a relaxed yet polished appearance.
Garden
For Her:
Tea-Length Dresses: Tea-length dresses in floral patterns or soft, romantic colors are perfect for a garden setting. Consider dresses with lace or chiffon details for a whimsical touch.
Comfortable Heeled Sandals: Opt for comfortable heeled sandals that add a touch of elegance while allowing you to navigate the garden terrain easily.
For Him:
Smart Casual Attire: Choose a smart casual look with a well-fitted shirt and tailored trousers. Soft colors or subtle patterns complement the garden aesthetic.
Classic Loafers: Complete the ensemble with classic loafers for a polished yet garden-friendly outfit.
Urban
For Her:
City Chic Dress:
Bodycon Midi Dress: Choose a form-fitting midi dress in a bold color like burgundy or navy. This sleek and sophisticated option complements the urban backdrop while highlighting your figure.
Edgy Jumpsuit:
Black Leather Jumpsuit: Make a statement with an edgy black leather jumpsuit. This chic and modern choice adds a touch of urban glam, perfect for the dynamic streets of Brooklyn.
Casual Street Style:
High-Waisted Skinny Jeans and Oversized Sweater: Embrace a casual street style with high-waisted skinny jeans paired with a slightly oversized sweater. Add ankle boots for a trendy and comfortable look.
Bohemian Vibes:
Flowy Boho Dress and Ankle Boots: For a more bohemian flair, choose a flowy boho-style dress paired with ankle boots. This look strikes a balance between urban chic and free-spirited elegance.
For Him:
Classic Urban Suit:
Charcoal Gray Suit with Crisp White Shirt: Opt for a classic charcoal gray suit paired with a crisp white shirt for a timeless and sophisticated urban look. Consider adding a slim tie for a modern touch.
Smart Casual Ensemble:
Tailored Denim Jacket, White Tee, and Chinos: Achieve a smart casual look with a tailored denim jacket over a white tee and paired with well-fitted chinos. This ensemble is both stylish and comfortable.
Streetwear Cool:
Graphic Tee, Bomber Jacket, and Distressed Jeans: Embrace streetwear with a cool graphic tee, a bomber jacket, and distressed jeans. Complete the look with stylish sneakers for an effortlessly trendy vibe.
Modern Monochrome:
All-Black Ensemble: Create a modern and sleek appearance with an all-black ensemble. Black slim-fit jeans, a black crewneck sweater, and black Chelsea boots come together for a sophisticated urban look.
Dress for the season
Dressing for the season is more than a style choice. As you prepare for your engagement shoot, we’ll keep an eye on the weather but it’s always important during the spring and the fall when the weather can be less consistent, temperature wise, to always prepare layers.
Benefits of Layering:
Flexibility: Easily adjust your outfit by adding or removing layers based on the weather conditions. Stay warm when it's cool, and shed layers when it gets warmer.
Texture and Depth: Incorporating layers adds texture and depth to your outfits, creating visual interest in your photos. Think cozy sweaters, stylish jackets, or elegant shawls that complement your chosen season.
Versatility: Layered outfits offer versatility, allowing you to experiment with different looks during the session. This versatility adds variety to your photo collection.
Comfort First: When you're comfortable, you're more likely to enjoy the moment and express your genuine emotions. Layering ensures you're prepared for any weather, making the entire experience enjoyable.
Not only will you be well-prepared for any weather surprises, but you'll also create a visually dynamic and comfortable atmosphere for your session.
Avoid loud patterns and large logos
While patterns can be eye-catching, too many loud prints can distract from the main focus—you and your partner. Opt for subtle patterns or solid colors that complement each other. Similarly, logos and brand names can be distracting in photos. Keep your attire logo-free to maintain a clean and timeless look that puts the focus on your relationship.
Accessorize thoughtfully
Accessories can add personality and make an everyday outfit look polished.
Fit matters.
No matter if you’re pulling an outfit already on your shelf or getting something new, always check the fit of your clothes before your shoot! Well-fitted clothing not only looks better but also enhances your comfort and confidence during the shoot. Tailor your outfits to ensure they flatter your individual body shapes. We highly recommend checking the fit of your outfits a week or two before your session, so you have time to make any adjustments that might be needed and you don’t have to stress about it the day of your shoot.
Be true to yourselves
Ultimately, your engagement photos should reflect your personalities and style as a couple. Be true to yourselves, your style and tastes and let your love shine through in every shot.
The Takeaways:
There are a lot of different ways you can style your engagement look. The most important things to think about are where you will have your session and when, so that no matter if you choose to dress up or opt for a more casual route, your outfit will compliment the location and won’t distract from the subject of the photos (you).
Mix and Match: Mix casual pieces with slightly dressier elements for a balanced look. For example, pair a casual top with dressier bottoms or vice versa.
Stay Relaxed: Prioritize comfort in your casual choices. Natural settings call for easygoing and relaxed outfits that allow you to move comfortably.
Layering: Consider layering with casual jackets, cardigans, or lightweight sweaters for a versatile and casual-chic look.
By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared to step in front of the camera and capture the magic of your engagement. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the moment and celebrate the love you share. Happy shooting!
